About The Measure of Cricket
Cricket is full of things we all “know”.
One wicket brings two. Left-right batting combinations disrupt bowlers. Batters get nervous in the nineties. Momentum matters.
But how much of it is actually true?
The Measure of Cricket uses data and analysis to test cricket’s conventional wisdom, explain patterns in the game and examine the decisions players and teams make.
The aim isn’t to turn cricket into a spreadsheet. It’s to use evidence to answer interesting questions about a sport full of assumptions, stories and received wisdom.
I’m Keith Barrett, and I write The Measure of Cricket. I have an analytical background and a long-standing interest in cricket, and this publication brings those two things together.
Articles will focus on questions where evidence can materially improve the answer — sometimes by testing familiar cricket theories, sometimes by explaining patterns, and sometimes by examining tactical or strategic decisions.
If you enjoy cricket, numbers and finding out whether the things we take for granted actually stand up to scrutiny, you’re in the right place.
